| 記述 | Libretto is drawn from the legend of the Ramayana, one of the great themes of Javanese theater. A Mandra Wanara spectacle lasts about two and a half hours and was formerly performed in the morning. It is written in the literary Javanese language and set in tembang macapat verse, following strict rules of versification. Here, the author employs seven different versifications. The music of this work is based on the Javanese orchestra known as the gamelan. This ensemble of twenty-five musicians comprises melodic percussion instruments (gender, saron, slentem with metallic slabs ; the gambang xylophone the bonang ensemble of horizontal gong chimes), melodic instruments (the suling flute, the rebab two-stringed fiddle, the celempung zither) and percussion instruments (the kendang drums ; the kenong, large horizontal bulbed gongs, and the kempul and gong agend, suspended gongs, serving as a rhythmic bass or to punctuate the musical phrase). The ensemble is tuned on a pentatonic scale called slendro and a vigorous musical mode, patet sanga. The troupe includes more than 50 dancers (75 persons with the musicians and chorists). World premiere recording. |
